In the recent RRC meeting, there was
some discussion about resident training in the administration
of unsealed sources. With the increasing use of radiolabeled,
targeted therapy, it is imperative for the radiation
oncologist to understand delivery, monitoring, and follow-up
of patients who require radioimmunotherapy. To this
end, the RRC will likely incorporate unsealed source
training into the curriculum of radiation oncology residency
in the near future. In the future, didactic lectures
will be required of individual residency programs, board
questions will be incorporated into the written exam
and six cases (I-131, strontium, etc) will be required
to be logged during residency.
